Driving down the freeway the other day I hit the scan button to find a radio station to listen to. A so-called Christian music station came on so I listened for a while. I do not normally listen to Christian radio as I do not like the music that they play. But as I listened I noticed that as the song played they reached the end of the song and proceeded to repeat the end over and over and over again. And it hit me; we sing songs in church that someone heard on the radio and liked and thought they would be good songs to sing in church. And we sing them just as they are played. We do a good job at copying the song in every detail.
It's no wonder why our song service is so hard for me to get in tune with. We are singing songs in a style that I personally do not like or enjoy or listen to on my own. The impact of the words do not carry beyond the spirit of the performers who recorded those songs. But at least now I understand why we sing songs like we do here. It is the same reason why I sing songs like I learned them to begin with somewhere else.
I do not expect this church to change. But it makes it easier for me to ignore the things that annoy me. I am able to eat the fish and spit out the bones.
