Why do we go to church? What benefit do we get from gathering together? Is church just a place to meet with God, like a temple? Is church just a place to hear preaching? Is church an evangelistic service where people get saved?
In a world rocked by loneliness, I see a benefit in gathering as a local church that is focused on the social aspect of assembly. In a world where people do not have friends and do not know how to make friends, church gives us a pool of potential friends at our fingertips.
I know that what a pastor thinks is important and what the people in the pews think is important is not always the same thing. Pastors are concerned with nickels, noses, and noise. People are concerned with family and friends.
Jesus builds his church with skill and wisdom. He places the members in the body as it pleases Him.
One more thought. Family is nice, but churches can be family based cliques if we are not careful. When is the last time you invested in someone who is not a part of your immediate family?
