Blasphemy

In Matthew chapter 12 the Lord warns against the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. This is a deep subject that I have been studying. The basic meaning of the word blasphemy is to slander and to despise the working of the Holy spirit. Bullinger describes it as the very worst kind of slander. Vine says that the word is confined to speech speaking defamatory words against the divine majesty.

Blasphemy is one of the evil things that comes from the defiled human heart. It is an attitude of heart that always come out in words spoken out loud.

"...for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." Matthew 12:34

In the text the religious leaders reviled Christ by saying he cast out demons by the prince of demons. They despised the working of the Holy Spirt through Christ. They slandered Jesus to discredit his legitimacy.

One fearful aspect of this warning is found in the text.

"...but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come."

Could it be that those who claim to believe the Bible is the word of God also despise the working of the Holy Spirit in divine healing and deliverance from demons today? Are those opposed to speaking in tongues in danger of blaspheming the Holy Spirit?

People use the argument that Jesus was God in the flesh to excuse their unbelief and rebellion. We cannot do what Jesus did because he was God and we are not. They do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
