Staying Focused

 Some of the greatest art work in the world is religious art. Great paintings, great statues, great cathedrals all owe their existence to the Christian world. That's great for the art world. But our faith is too focused to spend much time creating or enjoying great art.

We for years did movie outreaches. Some Evangelicals even tried making Christian movies. Good message, poor quality movies. We focus on the message more than the messenger.

Did you know that Bach is called the fifth evangelist? He wrote so much wonderful and glorious church music in his time that is still enjoyed by many today. The problem is that listening to Bach does not tell a person how to get saved.

Because we are so focused on our message, we will always be in a cultural minority. Our Gospel is a nice story until it tells sinners that they are sinners. No one will be calling us to pray at a presidential inauguration. No one will be calling us to open a session of the legislature with prayer. We are not those kinds of religious Christians. We would meet a classical Christian author or composer or artist and think that they are not saved. 

So maybe we are wise to ignore culture and stay focused on our message. Stay focused on being a light in the world, a city on a hill. Don't worry about making movies or records. Preach the gospel. Keep the main thing the main thing.
