A Tale Of Two Conferences

There are a couple of big differences between a big conference like Prescott and a smaller, regional conference like ours. They are all good and they all meet the needs of our Fellowship. But they are not all the same.

First, there is a quality of preaching difference. There is a weight to the preaching in one conference that is missing in other conferences. This has to do with the weight of the pastors who preach. You get weight in ministry by surviving big problems and going through things that make you despair of life. You gain weight in ministry by years of faithfulness through good times and bad. Sometimes, the local conference just does not have enough guys who have lived long enough to gain that kind of weight.

Second, one conference deals with heart and character issues while the other deals with practical issues. One deals with having more of God in my life, the other only deals with how to be a better pastor. Prescott used to always be about the heart. Being right with God. Being of one heart with pastor. Being a better person and being a better pastor are not always the same thing.

Regional conferences meet the needs of younger churches and younger pastors and new converts. That's the main reason why I do not attend the daytime conference services. I am not a pastor and I do not need instruction on how to be a better pastor. I attend every night to help do my job as an usher.
