Many years ago, when I was still a new convert, pastor Mitchell preached on America's greatest sin. Any guess what that sin was, and still is? Pastor said it was covetousness. The love of money. It is interesting that something like this has been obvious to wise observers for many years.
We should have the best health care in the world. Why don't we? The love of money. We should have the strongest economy in the world. The best education system in the world, the best government in the world. Why aren't we the best? The love of money.
The love of money thinks that he that has the gold, makes the rules. The love of money will lie to make more. The love of money will cause us to sacrifice our faith, family, and friends to make more.
" For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." 1 Tim.6:10
It is our love of money, or our fear of never having enough, or our lust for the influence that money buys, that produces unthinkable evil on the human race.
There is only one cure for greed. It is not prayer and fasting. It is not witnessing. It is not reading your Bible. The only cure for greed is to give. You must pay God His tithe. And you must give over and above your tithe. Giving at all is good. Giving at church is better.
How much is enough? I say, enough is enough!
One final thought. A world without God is a covetous world. The more of God, the more generous society becomes.
