The Hijacking of Christmas

Did you know that prior to world war two, Christmas was considered a religious holiday? It was not highly commercialized or used to make money. People remembered the birth of Christ and went to church and heard the Christmas story or saw a Christmas pageant.

Thanks to White Christmas, Hollywood and the fledgling television industry turned Christmas into a nostalgic time of friends, family, gifts, and romance. Coca Cola gave us the Santa Claus that we remember and expect. Jesus got pushed off the stage so that music and film could make millions of dollars.

Christ was not born on December 25th. Who knows why that date was chosen. The book of Acts does not spend time on the birth of Christ as much as on his death and resurrection. Christmas is a modern holiday.

One more thought. Irving Berlin wrote White Christmas. Bing Crosby sang the hit song. Is it possible that a Jewish songwriter and his unsaved musician friends turned our attention off of Christ and onto family, longing for home, and tradition?

Just saying.
